A Step by Step guide on How to write a great blog 

If you’re a growing small business that’s trying to grow its SEO you may have been told that you need to start writing blogs. If done correctly blogs help create relevancy which helps boost your search engine rankings. This tactic is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. In this blog, our team breaks down the nine steps on how to write a great blog. 

Step 1) Find and pick a theme 

First on our list is finding and picking a theme. The theme of your blog should be the overarching topic that you will cover throughout the blog. This could literally be anything but should relate to something you’re passionate about and more importantly know a lot about. For us, at Finden Marketing we write about all things new-age marketing, graphic design, and entrepreneurship as those are our main passions. We recommend finding a niche and writing about that rather than choosing a general topic. 

Step 2) Curate the keywords you want to target 

After you have figured out what you want to write about, we recommend creating a master list of searches and keywords that you want to appear on. We recommend making a list of between 20-50 keywords and picking 5-10 for each article. We recommend using “the Hoth” to see how you currently stand up. It’s a great free platform that shows exactly where you rank for specific keywords in real-time. 

Step 3) Create an overarching goal for the article

Having a plan of attack makes things go smoother when writing a great blog. Before you start to write decide what keywords you want to use, what the topic is and decide if you want to entertain, inform, or persuade. Once you have these three items chosen the next step is to start writing 

Step 4) Write 500 to 1000 words regarding the chosen theme

Top SEO specialists recommend that bloggers write anywhere from 500-2500 words when writing a blog. This varies heavily depending on what subject, the complexity, and the audience. A good rule of thumb is to write anywhere from 500-1000 words and stop when you feel you have sufficiently provided enough information for the reader. For example, this article you are reading is 1000 words and something must have worked with rankings because you found it. This isn’t a college paper, you don’t have to add fluff just to hit the word count.

Step 5) Add some relevant pictures throughout the blog

As you can see above adding pictures helps break up your paragraphs and adds a little breathing room for your reader. I recommend adding anywhere from one to 10 pictures when writing your articles (depending on the length of the article). If you need some custom-made imaging to check out Canva, a free graphic design tool that can help you create branded material without hiring a graphic designer. 

Step 6) Pick a title that gets your target market interested

The sad truth about blogs is that clickbait articles work. Creating headlines that make people stop and read will get you more viewers. This can be done with almost any industry and really gets people to start clicking on your posts. 

Step 7) Create a proper overview paragraph at the end

Having an end paragraph that summarizes your company is one of the easiest ways to find places to put those special keywords that you picked out in step 2. This overview should be anywhere from one to two paragraphs and should have your keywords, links to important pages, and a summary of what your company/blog does. Below is Finden’s:

Step 8) Fine-tune everything for SEO

Once you are done writing your blog it’s time for the hard part; optimizing it for SEO. This is usually the most time-consuming part of blog writings, and the most vital. There is an upside though. Most website development programs like WordPress and Wix have built-in plugins that can help speed up the process. If you use WordPress we recommend Yoast SEO. If you use Wix you’re in luck as it has built-in SEO help that will give you directions on how to improve your writing. With either platform, the rule of thumb is to shoot for the green checks all around.

Step 9) Post the blog everywhere

The last step is to post your blog everywhere you can. The more channels you showcase it, the more chance someone will look at it. We recommend making a social graphic like this one below to really make your story pop for visitors on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
