Black Friday or Cyber Monday, Which is More Important?

It’s that time of year again. Every marketing team is ramping up their online/offline efforts to get consumers to purchase the best deal of the year. A lot of businesses have completely thrown these two dates out the door to offer early access, month-long deals, etc. The allure of what BF/CM (Black Friday/Cyber Monday) used to be is mostly diminished. Gone are the days of heading to Kohl’s after a cheeky afternoon slice of pie and freezing in the elements. So spoiler alert, the two dates are somewhat irrelevant, but that shouldn’t stop you from capturing the uplift of traffic based on expectations for those two days. It’s truly up to you to decide which day is better for you, but as deals blend outside of the two dates, extended marketing efforts become more critical to the success of your promotions.

Regardless of your vertical in business, people typically expect a deal. We still see a lot of people waiting for the BF/CM weekend to purchase, but there is a lot of window shopping and early sales that can happen if deals are extended. With people perusing sales leading up to the event, the conversion rate (CVR) on goods and services tends to drop drastically. With CVR being low leading up to the weekend, marketing efforts are extremely relevant in getting your message out. Your return on investment during the lead-in period will likely be much poorer than your usual results, but those efforts will pay dividends during the weekend.

So What’s the Answer?

The answer is, well, both! Depending on your business and the way you sell your products, Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be extremely important for your consumers. Another important day would be Small Business Saturday. If you are a small business, well then Small Business Saturday may be more important. If you are a brick-and-mortar location then Black Friday may be more important. Lastly, if you are an e-commerce or online store then Cyber Monday may be more important to you. The big thing is to find your buyer and market to them! Just like any situation, there isn’t one right answer, it all depends on your business and who your business is trying to sell to.

There is a lot of noise that picks up this time of the year. Every business is grasping for attention with large red signs indicating major price cuts. It can feel difficult to emerge from the metaphorical dust being created with a solid Q4, but with proper marketing efforts, messaging and solid offers, we are confident that you can do it!
