How to grow your business with the holiday rush

As a small business owner, the holidays bring a time of opportunity, joy, and hopefully crazy sales. Many shoppers are searching the web and stores looking for the next big present for their loved ones. The best part about all of this is today’s society has everything so getting gifts has become harder in harder. This is where your business can come in. In this week’s blog, our team of marketers will discuss easy tips that can help grow your business for the holiday rush. These are 6 easy tips and tricks to double your sales, boost your revenue, and get people talking about your business during this holiday season.

Tip #1 – Update your website to fit the festive season

The first tip on this list is one of the most important. Your website is the foundation of your customer’s journey and when done correctly will lead to them buying your product. During the holiday season change your website to target the popular gifts for your customers, and showcase some festive flair. A great example is the eCommerce brand Hayneedle (located below). They know what their customers are looking for and make it extremely easy to buy them. This leads to an increase in traffic since they become a destination for the holiday rush, and will also most likely lead to an increase in sales.

Tip #2 – Create a social media content calendar for the season

Our second holiday tip is to plan the entire season before it happens. This can be done with a content calendar, which is a document that showcases when, where, and what you are going to post for a given time period. Our recommendation is to plan a month out, and curate said posts for all social media platforms that you use. A great example of a free content calendar can be found here from our friends over at Hubspot.

Tip #3 – Create a holiday deal that gets people talking

Many businesses provoke sales during this time through a one-time-only sale that pushes people to save money on gifts that their loved ones will adore. Look at exercise bike brand Peloton. They created a fantastic deal for the holiday rush and it has led to skyrocketing sales. This sale doesn’t have to be a huge percent off, but should be something that is different than other sales

Note: if you are a lower price item a great idea to boost sales is to sell multiple in a pack and call it stocking stuffers. For larger priced items sell it with a custom bow or card and you’ll see sales jump. Our biggest rule of thumb is doing something that will get your product to stand out and that gets people to choose you over the 1000’s of other gifts on the market.

Tip #4 –  Do a festive photoshoot with your products or team

As the old saying goes a picture says a thousand words. Doing a festive photoshoot can help your product stand out, and can help showcase its uniqueness in the market. One of our favorite examples is with our friends over at Mike & Jen’s hot cocoa. We were out doing a shoot for a different client and pulled out a bag of their delicious hot chocolate to warm up. This led to us taking a festive shot which “in our opinion” really showcases their brand.

Tip #5 –  Get testimonials on why your product is the best gift for the holiday season

This tip could be used at any point in the year but is especially important during the holiday rush. If you can curate testimonials that help push uncertain customers into buying your product you will see a massive increase in sales. These reviews could be something along the lines of this one that I just made for Mike & Jen’s:

“When I first ordered Mike & Jen’s I wasn’t sure if my family was going to like it. It was a little more expensive than other cocoas, but I had a gut feeling it was going to be good. After taking one sip it truly became a family tradition. I will definitely be buying this product again and again during the holiday season. – Andrew Weisz”.

This review could be slapped on social media, put on their website, and will have its spot as free marketing on all of your review sites like Google and Yelp for as long as they are in business. The more of these you get, the more people start buying your product. Remember don’t be afraid to ask people who love your products to write a review.

Tip #6 – Create a curated paid media campaign (ads)

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. Unfortunately, with the holiday shoppers that is most likely the case. Spending some money on ads can help boost your relevancy in key areas. This will get your website to show up first getting you more clicks and more sales. This can be done with as little as $500 a month to start seeing great results. Tip #7 –  Sell your product at festive small business events

Holiday events can be a goldmine for certain businesses. If you sell a product that catches people’s eyes, or that can be sold with a fun demonstration you have to attend these events. They are usually relatively cheap to join and offer thousands of potential customers looking for gifts to buy their loved ones. One of my favorites is a local festival in Duluth called the Duluth Winter Village. This festive event brings in hundreds of businesses to showcase fun foods, great drinks, and awesome products. Find your local event and sign up today! It’s great for your brand and you’ll most likely get some sales.

Also if you don’t want to go yourself, find a vendor that is going and make a deal where they’ll sell your stuff for a commission. It’s half the work and you can still get your product sold during the holiday rush.

Tip #8 – Create a holiday bundle with similar products

The last tip on the list is probably the most time-intensive. This tip is to create a bundle with other local businesses that altogether make a great gift. For example, if you sell razors finding another company that sells aftershave, and a third that sells shaving cream. You would then create a bundle with a fancy box and WAM you sell it for a bulk price and split the difference. This works exceptionally well with coupled products and also offers an easy way for your product to get into multiple stores. This type of sale has been shown time and time again to be beneficial for businesses and can help curate great partnerships for the future.

Below is an example of what we mean you can see multiple companies that if sold alone a consumer might buy one of these, but together they create a unique curated gift that people will buy time and time again.

Well, that has it, these are our 8 tips on how to boost your holiday sales. Thanks for reading and we hope you see great success during the holiday rush!
