Winter is just around the corner. Duluth has already had its first snowfall and the weather is getting colder. Many are preparing for the abomination that we call Duluth winters. Okay, it may not be THAT bad. Honestly, we love it! Duluth Minnesota offers so many unique things to do throughout the winter and today we wanted to showcase our top 12 things that we love doing when we aren’t out marketing. This list is comprised of local events, places you have to go, and items you need to do during the winter while in our beautiful city of Duluth. 1) Catch a UMD Hockey Game
The first item on our list is a classic and is sure to bring you much cheer as you celebrate the local heroes, the UMD Bulldogs. The Bulldogs teams are notorious for being some of the best players in college hockey and are sure to wow both you and your family. Our recommendation is to make a day out of it and go to a women’s and men’s doubleheader.

2) Go Skiing at Spirit Mountain
Don’t forget to hit the slopes of Spirit Mountain while in Duluth. These unique hills have been a part of Duluth’s winters for almost 50 years. Hit the slopes and spend some time grinding the powder. This is a great activity for all ages.

3) Do some Ice climbing around the North Shore
If you love rock climbing you will love ice climbing! Duluth has recently sprung up as one of the top ice climbing locations in the US and consistently brings some of the best climbers from across the country to do the unique routes along the shores of Lake Superior. There are many businesses that will teach you the basics and get you out on the ice.

4) Hangout on Lake Superior
If you can believe it Lake Superior freezes over! Well, sometimes. Every few years the winter gets cold enough for the vast lake to freeze over. That combined with little wind makes the largest skating rink in the world. Below is a picture from 2022 when our team got out and skated across the lake bringing some amazing views that are rarely ever seen. This is by far one of our favorite winter activities in Duluth, Minnesota! Check out this sweet photo we got last year.
5) Drink some Mike & Jen’s HotCocoa on the Lake Shore
One of Duluth’s best gems Mike and Jen’s hot cocoa has been called “the best cocoa in the world”. Their simple ingredients make the most desirable cocoa. Our recommendation is to grab your two favorite mugs, a thermos full of cocoa, and make your way down to the shore to hang out and drink some great hot cocoa. 6) Go to Duluth Winter Village
Move over black Friday, Duluth’s Winter village is here. This event is THE place you need to go if you are looking for unique local gifts for the holidays. With over a hundred vendors this place is bustling with activity, food, and gifts.

7) Avoid going outside the month of February
Duluth in February can be cold. Our favorite activity is to avoid that and get caught up on all of our favorite TV shows and books. Looking for a family activity? We recommend going to your local thrift store and letting everyone buy a random board game. Start a family game night and see who has the best picking taste by playing your new games.
8) Tour Bentleyville
One of the most popular holiday traditions in Duluth is to visit Bentleyville. This light display is one of the largest in the country and has won multiple awards for its beauty. The space is free to the public and offers great gifts for children including a free beanie and the chance to meet Santa! No matter your age Bentleyville is an item you definitely won’t want to miss.

9) Go Iceskating on one of Duluth’s outdoor rinks
As one of the big hockey towns in the nation, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that Duluth has a plethora of outdoor hockey rinks littered across the town. These rinks are open to the public and offer a great date idea for anyone that’s sick of being cooped up. Most locations have rental skates available.

10) Snowshoe the ground of Glensheen
I’m going to say it, nothing is more beautiful than Glensheen during the winter. The staff spents tireless hours fully decorating the 27,000 SF home to look immaculate both inside and out. However, one of my favorite activities is to venture outside and utilize their snowshoe rental program to wander around the estate. This is free to anyone that buys a tour so make sure to double dip and take a house tour prior for the ultimate adventure.

11) Watch the Beargrease Dogsled race
One of the most sought-after dogsled races in America happens to be in our neck of the woods. This is one of those events you HAVE to attend so make sure to book your calendar.

12) Ride the Christmas City Express
Choo Choo, all aboard the Christmas city express. This train excursion put on the Lake Superior Railroad is spectacular with unique cars all fitting the Christmas cheer.
