You have questions; we have answers. Landing your gig at a marketing agency is a daunting but rewarding experience. Marketing is a vast world and ever-changing. We believe that the days of specializing in one thing are coming to a halt, at least for great marketers. You really have to build out your skills, experiences and overall marketing abilities to work in this fast-paced environment. Luckily, we have a list of certifications that will help you and tips for your resume. Let’s assume that you’re an engaged Daily Ember reader and you are past that point. We want to talk about the next step of actually searching for your first marketing job.
Picking An Agency Type
Before you run off to Indeed or switch your Linkedin profile to “looking for work,” we have to still do some groundwork on the type of marketer you want to be. A great place to start is asking, “What type of Agency do I want to work with?”
Picking an agency is like dating; there are a lot of options out there, but you have to be careful! Depending on the type of person you are, you will likely fit into the following agency types:
- Ad Agency
- Creative Agency
- Full-Stack Agency
- PR Agency
- Social Media Agency
Although there are more, for the sake of saving your eyes, we will keep it at that. Each one can be vastly different that the other. Having a good idea of these types will save you a lot of headaches and will help define the type of marketer you want to become. If you take Finden for example. We are a full-stack marketing agency and offer many different services. We believe that it fits best for our strengths and our team does their best work in that setting.
Once you choose the type of agency, rather than scouring Linkedin, we recommend spending that time on Google so you can make your grocery list of companies.
The Actual Application Phase
After that list is complete, it’s time to start applying! There are thousands of articles that talk about action words on your resume, do’s and don’ts and so on. Since there is so much information out there for that topic, we want to get real. With your first job, there is a high probability that you get shut down. Hard. We know better than most, because not too long ago, we went through this phase. It isn’t pretty, but there are better ways to navigate it. If you took action from our previous blogs, you should be set.
An incredible benefit is having experience. Period. Yes, a degree is awesome, but real-world application is world’s better. Highlight the work you have done and explain how you can apply what you learned to that employer’s situation. With our tips and your hard work, you will land the job, no problem.
Once you get the Job
Congratulations on getting your first marketing job. You absolutely deserve it, but now you really have to get after it. Soak in as much as you can. Ask questions, gain knowledge, get out of your comfort zone and you will be set. Learning doesn’t stop once you secure the position. Your future self will thank you if you continue to push your learning limits as you become a stellar marketer.
